Two-Day Course in Hydrotherapy for Back and Knee Conditions

 Course Description:

Hydrotherapy is an evidence-based physiotherapy approach for various back and knee conditions. The benefits of hydrotherapy include increased flexibility, strength, proprioception, balance and decreased pain. This Two-Day Course in Hydrotherapy for Back and Knee Conditions comprises didactic and practical sessions and aims to equip physiotherapists with scientific knowledge and hands-on skills to apply hydrotherapy to clients with common back and knee pathologies, such as prolapsed intervertebral disc, ankylosing spondylitis, arthritis of the spine and knee, total knee arthroplasty and ligament reconstruction.

 

 

Target Participants:

Physiotherapists who are interested but with little to no experience in hydrotherapy

 

 

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion and active participation of the two-day course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the utilization and apply the physical properties of water (buoyancy, turbulence and metacenter) in hydrotherapy exercise designs
  • Describe the basic principles of pool management and safety
  • Demonstrate clinical reasoning in designing hydrotherapy programs for clients with common back and knee problems
  • Demonstrate proper selection and use of hydrotherapy equipment
  • Identify indications and contraindications for hydrotherapy

 

About the Instructors:

Ms CHOW Chi Ying has worked as a physiotherapist for 20 years and is currently a Physiotherapist I specializing in hydrotherapy at The Centre on Health & Wellness, The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation. She has taken multiple professional development courses in hydrotherapy and obtained the Certificate in Halliwick Concept and the Certificate in Bad Ragaz Ring Method by the International Aquatic Therapy Association, as well as the Certificate in AiChi and the Certificate in Watsu. In addition, Chi Ying has been teaching continuing education courses in hydrotherapy at the Physical Fitness Association of Hong Kong and the Asian Academy for Sports and Fitness Professionals. She is also a visiting clinical associate at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, teaching physiotherapy students hydrotherapy knowledge and skills.

 

Ms. NG Yuk Mun is currently the Senior Physiotherapy (Professional Development) at the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation. She has engaged in extensive professional development courses related to exercise and health, such as sports and nutrition and health education. She has obtained the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute Certificate on Aquatic Rehabilitation as well as the Certificate in AiChi. She is also a visiting clinical associate at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, teaching physiotherapy students contents related to health management.

 

Dr. YIP Siu Fai Henry is a Specialist in Orthopaedics and Traumatology in private practice. He has extensive clinical experience in both public and private sectors and was a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. In addition to clinical practice, he is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor for the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong.
